Emily was grateful for the wonderful bed and breakfast that Courtney had arranged for her, but she was infinitely more grateful for the invitation to Courtney’s house the next morning shortly after breakfast. There was something about being accused of murder that made you want to have your friends at your side, even if they were very new friends.

“Emily, come on in,” Courtney said when she opened the door. She was dressed in jeans and a sweater with a dog knitted into the pattern. The real life dog was bouncing around at her feet. “Have you eaten anything yet?”

“Oh, yes. I didn’t think I had much of an appetite when I woke up, to be honest with you. It was a very restless night of sleep. But the next thing I knew I was downstairs in the dining room, gobbling up as much bacon and biscuits as they wanted to give me,” she chuckled.

“I’m so sorry that all of this has happened.” Courtney shut the door behind her and gestured for her to have a seat on the couch with the others. “I feel like it’s all my fault that you’re involved, since I had invited you.”

Emily shook her head. She took a seat and gladly endured a thorough sniffing by Peppa. “Don’t you worry about that. These things happen. If I had stayed at home, I’m sure something else equally dramatic would’ve come up, since they always seem to. I’ll just have to be very careful if my son calls. Nathan is always so protective of me, and if he finds out about this he’ll probably try to make me move in with him,” she laughed.

“You do seem to have a pretty good attitude about it all,” Sammy noted. She sat next to Emily on the couch with a big cup of coffee in her hands.

“I don’t see much point in being otherwise. As I said, there’s bound to be trouble cropping up here and there, and none of us can avoid it all. We just have to do the best we can. That’s not to say any of this is easy or pleasant, but I went through much worse when my husband passed away. If I got through that, then I can get through anything.”

Courtney nodded. “And right now, we’d probably be smart to get through some sort of plan to figure out who really did poison Robert Rose. I don’t particularly like being on a list of suspects.”

“Same here,” Sammy agreed.

Emily thought about this for a moment. “I know Detective Fletcher said otherwise, and of course I’ll do as he asks, but I don’t really consider myself to be a suspect at all.”

“Why is that?” Courtney asked as she bent down to pick up a rubber dog toy. She chucked it down the hallway, and the hyper Peppa took off after it.

“I’m not from here, so I don’t know anyone except for you two and the handful of other people I’ve met. I did technically meet Mr. Rose before he died, but that was a quick exchange that happened in front of other people.
